Vilton and Eterno Terrazzo joined together to develop a new Curing felt for protection and follow-up treatment of fresh concrete.
The definition of follow-up treatment is a collection of actions which avoid the premature drying out of fresh concrete.
Well known and often used follow-up treatments against the drying of concrete are: wetting and keeping wet, spraying with a curing compound or maintaining the formwork for a longer period of time. However, these methods all have their disadvantages.
• Constantly keeping the concrete wet is labour intensive and sometimes not possible at all
• Delaying the dismantling of the formwork will cost precious building time
• Applying curing compounds may affect other materials, such as coatings or impregnating materials
Eterno Terrazzo is an innovative company which combines the age-old craft of the terrazzo worker with the latest expertise and industrial techniques. Managing director Cor Hoogeveen, who previously worked for “Betonmortelcentrale Flevoland”, is very satisfied with the specially developed felt.
“We started with Vilton’s standard felt”, Mr. Hoogeveen says. “As soon as the terrazzo has enough strength, a foil is fitted to avoid early seeping out of water. The water is necessary to get a complete binding of the cement.
By doing so, the floor gets its desired characteristics.”
At Jos Nederstigt’s special request, Eterno Terrazzo’s Manager, Vilton has developed the felt even further. Several contractors asked for a felt which had more sturdy characteristics and could therefore be left, even after the concrete’s follow-up treatment. The felt didn’t need to be disposed of and even had a second function, protecting the floor against mechanical damage during construction.
Curing felt has been developed from this idea.
The felt is made up of an initial layer of foil, with a layer of recycled felt on top of it. A wearing surface is applied as a secondary layer, which allows the felt to be walked on and which provides the concrete floors with good protection.
“Very small holes in the foil will allow the water to seep through, but will prevent it from vaporising, so the surface of the fresh concrete will not dry out prematurely”, says Nederstigt.
Curing felt is available in rolls of 50 m length and 2 m width. 1 m width can be also supplied upon special request.
